Master's Degree Program
Graduate students focusing on real estate appraisal can apply education towards
earning the Appraisal Institute prestigious MAI
membership designation through the AI Master's Degree Program.
Students can meet Appraisal Institute education requirements by taking pre-approved
courses administered by the participating universities covering the same material
and body of knowledge as those given by the Appraisal Institute, with the exception
of the Standards of Professional Practice and AI Business Practices
and Ethics required courses and the Comprehensive Examination. (Note:
Other exceptions may exist at particular universities).
Students who are currently enrolled in a participating master's degree program are
eligible to become general Candidates for Designation of the Appraisal Institute.
Benefits of being a Candidate for Designation through the AI Master's Degree Program
include:
- No annual fees while enrolled at the participating university;
- All advantages
and discounts offered to all Candidates for Designation, including discounts
on education and publications;
- Receive the Appraisal Institute periodicals The Appraisal Journal and
Valuation magazine at no cost.
How To Apply
- For university degree program enrollment information, interested individuals should
contact the participating universities directly.
- After acceptance into an approved
participating university program, enrolled students may request an application for Candidacy
by emailing
mdp@appraisalinstitute.org.

in the Appraisal Institute, please contact 312-335-4111 or
mdp@appraisalinstitute.org
You will be asked to provide evidence of your enrollment in the program in the form
of a letter from the university.
Additional Requirements
In addition to successful completion of the qualified master's degree program, all
students interested in attaining the MAI Designated membership must:
- Pass the 15-hour National USPAP course/exam and the AI Business Practice
& Ethics course, and possibly the General Appraiser Report Writing
and Case Studies course/exam.
- Receive credit for Specialized
Experience requirement. Work done as part of a job, internship or thesis project
may be submitted as a part of the hours requirement if it meets the criteria
in the
General Admissions Procedure Manual.
- Receive credit for the Demonstration
of Knowledge requirement. A thesis may be submitted if it meets the requirements
outlined in the Official Guide to the Demonstration of Knowledge Requirement: General.

Successfully pass the Appraisal Institute General Comprehensive Exam.
- Submit
application for MAI Designated membership.
